Taiwan, Germany deepen exchange in family policies, health

Deputy Health Minister Lue Jen-der led a delegation to Germany’s Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and related agencies Oct. 11-15.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, in addition to meeting with his counterpart at that ministry, Michael Brand, Lue also visited Georg Kippels, state secretary for the Federal Ministry of Health, and Bundestag member Stephan Pilsinger, who also serves as deputy chair of that body’s health committee.

During the meeting with Brand, the state secretary said German law stipulates that children 3 years old and under are entitled to care through federal subsidies, which the MOHW said is similar to Taiwan’s current policy supporting child care for children under 6.

Lue also took advantage of the thirtieth anniversary of Taiwan’s health insurance to conduct an exchange with Pilsinger on the topic of health policies and health insurance reform, the MOHW said, adding that cooperation on telemedicine was also discussed.

During Lue’s meeting with Kippels, he expressed appreciation for Germany’s firm support at the last three meetings of the World Health Assembly. They also discussed strengthening collaboration in smart medicine and disease monitoring, the MOHW said.

Additionally, Lue met with Johanna Hanefeld, acting vice president of the federal health ministry-affiliated Robert Koch Institute, which oversees control of contagious diseases. According to the MOHW, the two parties talked about the importance of interministerial cooperation in epidemic prevention.
