Director Wu Fan won the Emerging International Filmmaker Award for her film “XiXi” at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival May 6.

This category recognizes an international filmmaker whose competition film is their first or second feature-length film. Wu said that she dedicated the trophy to film makers who persist despite the difficulties and said that video gives life dignity and meaning.

In remarks on receiving the award, Wu thanked her inspiration for the film, a performance artist called Xixi whom she met in Berlin, the crew, her family and other supporters, the Ministry of Culture said. Hot Docs’ official website characterized the film as a story about courage and nonconformity and praised Wu for her innovative and transformative movie.

Hot Docs is one of North America's largest documentary film festivals. This year’s edition was held April 25-May 5.
